Sponsorship

Estonia has opened the door to a new beginning. The state’s economic growth forecasts are positive, and export markets are showing signs of recovery. Nordea feels that now is the time for the country to create new opportunities, whether they be in business, sport or culture. We are prepared to contribute to the knowledge-based economy and to the development of society.

Guided by the quality of Nordea Bank, we support music for the most demanding tastes and put our weight behind traditional sports. We hope that we can change our living environment for the better and boost our competitive edge internationally. Working with our partners, we can pave the way for major events in Estonia’s cultural and sporting life.

In the projects we sponsor we set greatest store by health, cultural value and social background. The extent of our sponsorship depends on the budgets and importance of the projects in question and on the options open to the bank at the time.

Sport

The Nordea group as a whole has been working with the Olympics committees in a number of countries and supporting outstanding athletes and medal winners for many years. The sports we sponsor are football, downhill skiing, tennis and golf. However, we are unable to apply the same principle in all of the countries in which the group is represented, which is why we support the most popular sports in each country, including Estonia.

Nordea’s own recreational sports project, the Nordea Fun Run, was held in 2003 and 2004. Its slogan, ‘relax in nature’, was designed to encourage mainly office workers to get out, do some exercise and enjoy the fresh air in the company of their friends.

In early 2009 the bank signed a three-way deal with Olympic winner Gerd Kanter and the Estonian Athletics Association which saw Nordea become Kanter’s main sponsor. We are continuing to work closely together.

Since 2009 Nordea Bank and the Sub-fund of the Spouse of the President of the Republic (which forms part of the President of the Republic’s Cultural Fund) have been issuing the Young Athlete of the Year award. The patron and presenter of the award is First Lady Evelin Ilves.

More detailed information about the Young Athlete of the Year award is available online at http://www.president.ee/et/institutsioonid/kultuurirahastu.php?gid=127040.

This award, which is issued twice a year, is designed to be presented to athletes up to the age of 21 who display excellent academic results. The cash prize constituting the award is meant for use in training and to cover the costs of competition.

Culture

Nordea Bank has been the main sponsor of the Nargen Festival – Estonia’s biggest music and theatre festival – since 2007. The bank’s clients receive a 10% discount on tickets to festival events. The partnership between Nordea and Nargen is based on Nordic values and a strong connection with the sea and neighbouring countries.

More details about the Nargen Festival can be found on its website at www.nargenfestival.ee.

We have also been one of the main sponsors of the Nature Photo of the Year competition for the last five years, supporting both young and experienced photographers who are dedicated to and inspired by what they do.

Around the world

Just as the Estonian economy needs to search for opportunities beyond its borders in order to guarantee sustainable growth, so people sometimes reach a stage in their lives where they set out to explore the world in search of new ideas. Nordea Bank is happy to contribute to such a quest: we are the main sponsor of the ‘Around the World’ voyage, which will see the catamaran ‘Nordea’ traversing the globe from 2 October 2010 to 1 June 2012. We hope that on returning from their odyssey the intrepid sailors will create new value and new opportunities in the cultural, theatre and economic life of Estonia. Change and development often rely on an external impetus, after all.

Cooperation and trust are particularly important in reaching your destination at sea and in the financial world alike, and they can both be put to the test in the harshest conditions. That’s why we should all cross our fingers that the ‘Nordea’ encounters fair winds on its voyage around the world. The adventures of captain Toonart Rääsk, shipmates Raul Normak, Marko Matvere and Jaan Tätte and the 60 or so sailors accompanying them on and off on their travels can be followed online at www.ilmareis.ee.

My Country

The closer Estonians feel to their country, the stronger its society and economy will be. In working more closely together, more and more opportunities arise. It is for these very reasons that Nordea Bank supports the nation-wide integration project ‘My Country’.

The project was launched in 2002, when pupils from schools with Russian as the language of instruction began to be taught about the way Estonia is run. In the eight years since then, more than 60,000 students and teachers have attended the special days held as part of the educational programme. Graduating students from elementary and secondary schools are gaining a better understanding of Estonia’s nationhood and civic society. The students get to meet with the nation’s leaders and state officials, soaking up their knowledge of how a democratic society is run.

By supporting ‘My Country’ we are hoping to see more and more young people opening their eyes and becoming citizens who are more aware of their homeland. More information is available online at http://www.minuriik.ee/.

What kind of information should sponsorship applications include?

  • An informative but brief outline of the planned project (the idea behind it, its background, its timeline, the people behind it etc.)
  • The project’s budget (planned revenue and expenditure)
  • A list of sponsors supporting the project (including the division of sponsorship amounts between the main sponsor and other sponsors)
  • A specific media plan to advertise the sponsors based on sponsorship amounts, including information on the need for additional materials for such advertising
  • Information on the involvement of other partners and their roles in the project

How should applications be submitted?

Written applications should be submitted electronically by e-mailing them to sponsorlus@nordea.com or by post to the Nordea Bank Marketing Department at Liivalaia 45, 10145 Tallinn.

All applications are reviewed and all applicants are informed of our decision.

We do not sponsor the following:

  • Undertakings which go against the values of Nordea Bank or the Nordea group
  • Political events
  • Individuals
  • Sports which promote aggression
  • Sports involved in doping scandals
  • Last-minute applications

We give preference to the following:

  • Projects which support children’s health and preventive social work
  • Cultural and sports events which enjoy extensive public interest
  • Involvement as the main sponsor, a major sponsor or the only sponsor
  • Not being advertised alongside other banks (with the exception of joint projects between banks)

Nordea places a great deal of emphasis on quality, and it is on this that we base our selection of sponsorship projects. Together we can lay the foundations for major events in Estonia’s cultural and sporting life.

Nordea, we create new opportunities, together!
