Netbank Security
Brief overview of Netbank security practices
Nordea Bank is doing its utmost to ensure the security of our Netbank. We will achieve the best result in mutual cooperation.
Nordea Netbank service is secure
Nordea Netbank users are identified by their user ID and the codes from their code card – or the ID card and its PIN code. You will be given your user code and code card when you sign the Internet bank user account agreement.
The code card contains 120 four-digit single use codes. You will be prompted for these codes after you enter your user ID. After you enter the 90th code, the Bank will send you a new code card by post.
If your account has been idle or 15 minutes, the session will time out and you will have to enter anew your user code and the code you are prompted for from the code card. If you are logging in with your ID card, first exit your browser, then re-open it. The limited session time is your defence against misuse of your account if you forget to exit the Internet bank.
Always exit the Netbank by pressing the “Log out" button.
How to enter the Nordea Netbank
You can choose whether to enter the Nordea Netbank with either your ID card or your code card.
Logging in with the code card
Users who use their code card to log in are authenticated by user ID and four-digit code card codes. When you sign your user account agreement, you will be given your user ID and code card in a sealed envelope.
1. To enter the Netbank, the first step is to enter the user ID you recieved with your Internet agreement and click OK.
2. The second step is to enter the code you are prompted for from your code card and press OK.
If you entered your user code incorrectly, press "Back" and start again. If you enter your user ID or code incorrectly, an error message will be displayed: "Authentication failed". If you enter the code incorrectly three times in a row, your user account will be blocked and an error message will be displayed: "Login failed (client locked)”.
To have the block lifted, please contact the nearest Nordea bank office or service outlet. After your identity is established in a bank office or at a service outlet, your account will be reactivated.
Logging in with an ID card
To log into the Netbank with an ID card, you will need the ID card's PIN code as well as the card itself. The connection with the bank will be created using the personal certificate that is built into the chip in the card. To use the ID card in the Internet, you will also need a card reader. The ID card reader is a computer peripheral into which you insert your ID card and which reads the data on the card.
Thus authentication via ID card consists of two key factors: something the user knows (PIN code) and something the user has (ID card).
To enter the Internet bank with an ID card, follow these steps:
1. Insert the ID card in the reader, enter your user ID and click Log in with ID card.
2. In the window that opens, enter the ID card PIN1 code and click OK. The Internet bank will be at your disposal as long as the card is in the reader.
To confirm the procedures, you will have to enter the confirmation code as prompted from the code card, and, in the case of the ID card, the PIN2.
Account limits can be set for payments within the parameters and according to the procedures established by the bank.
Requirements for storing security elements
Do not communicate your passwords to anyone via e-mail or over the telephone. And remember that Nordea Bank will never ask you to return your passwords. If anyone ever asks you for your password, refuse the request and notify the bank immediately!
In order to prevent unauthorized use and potential losses, we advise users to comply with the following requirements for security elements:
-
Keep your user ID and code card (ID card) in a place that is inaccessible to others – even family members. If you would like to authorize another person to handle your financial affairs, you must specify that person as a service user. When you enter your user ID and codes from your code card, be sure that no one can see them.
-
Keep user ID and code card (ID card) separate, since knowing only one security element, such as the user ID, will not allow misuse to occur;
-
Do not record security elements for others in a recognizable form on any objects (for example, it is strictly prohibited to record your user ID on the code card in any form). It is recommended that you memorize your user ID. In the event that you do not wish to memorize your user ID and must write it down, store it in a secure place, such as in a safe – by all means separate from your code card.
Protection of sessions
The SSL security protocol is an encryption technology supported by browsers. When SSL encryption is activated in Netscape and Explorer browsers, a lock icon is shown on the display. By clicking the Lock icon you can view the bank's security certificate, for example in Netbank. A secure connection begins with the letters https:// in the address field of the Internet service. If the Internet address begins with http://, the connection is not secured.
The connection to Netbank is protected with the SSL security protocol and Solo codes. The SSL protocol encrypts the data communications, and with the Solo codes the customer is identified by the bank. In addition, cookies are used to control the session.
Disconnecting from the Netbank service
In Nordea's Netbank the connection closes when the customer presses the "Log out" button. The duration of the bank connection is monitored to ensure security. One session can last two hours at the most. However, if the Netbank service is not used for 15 minutes, the connection is automatically closed in order to prevent the connection being left open by mistake.
